Electronic drum sets are another way to go for drummers in New York City. They tend to be a bit more expensive than your basic practice pad set, but can add much needed life to your practice.

I’ve always recommended that my students stick with the top two brands: Roland and Yamaha. Both companies build excellent electronic drum sets with fantastic sounds. Many years ago, my teacher, Chet Doboe, said that the technology is getting so good that we might soon feel no difference between an acoustic drum set and an electronic drum set. The electronic drum sets from Roland and Yamaha feel almost the same as acoustic drum sets.

Here is a list of electronic drum sets. If you bring this list to a store, a salesperson might recommend substitutions. Every person I know who has purchased an item that the “salesperson recommended”, ending up having to go back to the store for one reason or another. I’ve thoroughly researched the quality of the specific products listed and I highly endorse them.

Also, most of these drum sets don’t come with a drum throne or bass drum pedal so I’ve listed the models I highly recommend at the end. The best part of having a drum set like this is that you can plug in your headphones and play all night long without disturbing any of your neighbors. There’s even a place to plug your iPod in so you can jam with your favorite music. If you decide that you want amplification, I’ve included a list of amplifiers at the end as well.
