10 Tips to Become a Great Rock Drummer

  1. Use the Rock Drumming System. The Rock Drumming System is the most thorough course on rock drumming available.

  2. Develop good hand technique first. Without good technique, there will be a limit on how far you can progress with the Rock Drumming System. In addition to purchasing the Rock Drumming System, I would suggest purchasing the Moeller Method Secrets course.

  3. Develop good bass drum technique. Let’s face it, our feet can’t do as much stuff as hour hands do when drumming. Many people neglect bass drum technique and develop bad habits. The Rock Drumming System gives you a good introduction to bass drum technique. For a more in depth study of bass drum technique, purchase Bass Drum Secrets.

  4. Always practice drumming with a metronome. It’s important that you use a metronome, even if you feel your timing is perfect. Treat the metronome as if it were your band member. Listen to it attentively and lock in with it. Use it with all the material in the Rock Drumming System.

  5. Listen to Led Zeppelin. While there are so many bands and artists that have influenced rock, I feel that Led Zeppelin is one of the most important band for a drummer to learn from. This can be attributed to the wide variety of songs that they play, the complexity of some of there songs, or that amazing feel John Bonham had behind the drums. I would highly recommend the Led Zeppelin Box Set.

  6. Learn every song in the Led Zeppelin Drum Book. Take your time and learn it note for note. One of word of caution: because the book is transcribed, there might be some spots in the music that seem wrong (or debateable). Unfortunately, we can’t interview John Bonham to figure out what he played. At the same time, that’s the beauty of learning a drum part note for note. You have to get into the brain of one of the best rock drummers in history. Click here to purchase the Led Zeppelin Drum Book. The Led Zeppelin Drum Book is an excellent supplement to the Rock Drumming System.

  7. Video tape yourself. Watching yourself on video will give you invaluable feedback. Personally, I find it very difficult to watch myself play drums on video.

  8. Find a great teacher to help you. Like video, a great teacher will give you feedback and be able to really help you analyze every detail of your playing. In addition, your teacher will be able to help you correct problems immediately.

  9. Practice on a good drum set. Stick to reliable drum brands like Pearl, Ludwig, Tama, Yamaha, Gretsch, Mapex, and DW. For cymblas, Zildjian, Sabian, Paiste, and Meinl are reliable brands. For the best prices, visit the Funky Music Store.

  10. Stick with it. I can guarantee that you will get frustrated. One of the amazing things that I’ve had to learn about drumming is that skills don’t come all at once. They slowly unfold over time. With the Rock Drumming System, you can learn at your own pace. Who knows? You might surprise yourself with how quickly you progress.
