Becoming a Better Leader: A Brief Guide

Leadership is the ultimate goal for many people, whether working their way up the corporate ladder or even starting their own business. To excel, you obviously need to consider your effectiveness as a leader and where to improve. This is why we have put together the following – albeit brief – guide. So, let’s take a look.

Discover Your Leadership Style

The first thing that you need to do is to find out what your leadership style is. There are multiple different leadership styles to explore, including visionary, transformational, situational, supportive, and autocratic, to name but a few. Once you have discovered which form of leadership speaks the most to your style, you can assess your efficacy and perhaps discover some areas that could do with improvement. It might even be beneficial to take a course designed to provide leaders in business with the tools they need to excel.

Lead by Example

As a leader, you must remember that you are a role model for those working under you. It is your job to demonstrate behavior and exemplify the characteristics that you want to see in your team. To put it simply, you need to walk the walk as well as talk the talk. Employees tend to be buoyed and encouraged when they see their managers and leaders acting in accordance with what they preach. So, make sure that you are modeling the behaviors that you want to see from your team or staff.

Demonstrate Passion

If you want to get the best from your team, you must show them that you care. How else do you expect to make them care about the business’s goals if you don’t care about them yourself? To be a great leader, you need to have a genuine passion and enthusiasm for the projects or tasks you lead and the business as a whole. This passion should encompass your approach to work and your appreciation and zeal for your team’s contributions.

Listen as Much as You Speak

As a leader, you will need to communicate your expectations to the team; however, this does simply mean that you should be talking to them. You need to ensure that you are communicating effectively and that they are taking in and understanding the information you give them. In addition, you need to make sure you are listening to them too. Your way may not always be the best way. You need to be open to feedback—staff who feel heard often feel more valued and have higher levels of job satisfaction.

In the End

Becoming a better leader is a continual process. Do not be afraid to try new things and continue refining your leadership approach. The above suggestions do offer a great starting point for your leadership journey. It might even be worth asking your team where you can improve, they are the ones who have experienced your leadership style first-hand, and they will be able to give you feedback on where you excel versus what you need to work on.
