When I deliver my workplace mental health presentations, it’s usually human resources that hires me to come in. And one of the things that I hear from clients constantly is that they’re looking for simple things that they can give their employees to support their mental health. So let’s get started.
Encourage employees to talk about mental health
Number one, encourage employees to talk about mental health. Now, this is easier said than done. You can simply pause this video and type an email right now to encourage everyone to start talking about mental health, but it doesn’t matter unless the leadership is talking about their mental health.
So I encourage you to actually encourage the leaders in your company to start talking about their own mental health challenges. That’s a really powerful thing. And I’ve seen it done in several companies. And what happens is when it starts at the top, everyone else starts to do it and feels comfortable with it.
Because one of the reasons people don’t like talking about mental health, particularly in the workplace, oftentimes it’s a trust issue. It’s simply that they are worried that if someone hears about it, it’s going to affect their job in some way. And there’s a lot of distrust around company decisions right now, as many companies have had to make layoffs. So I think if you want to start promoting a culture that talks about mental health, you have to start with the leadership. And that leads me to point number two:
Focus on work-life balance
Encourage work-life balance. Now again, easier to say that you can pause the video type and email and say, we need to start focusing on work-life balance, but the way to really make sure people stay accountable is to call it out. When you notice that someone isn’t practicing work-life balance, for example, maybe you have a coworker that constantly sends emails at midnight.
You might want to bring that up with them. Now that might be the only time that they can do it. Maybe they’ve shared that this works for them, but it also might mean that they’re not getting the sleep that they need. So when you see someone not practicing work-life balance, it’s important to point it out. That’s how you change a culture.
And work-life balance is a challenge for everyone. How is it a challenge for you? I would love to hear from you. Please leave a comment below the video and let me know. How is work-life balance a challenge for you?
Share free resources
The third thing that you can do is share free resources with your employees. Not every resource has to be a huge financial investment, and there are many out there that are wonderful. I have curated some resources that are free, that you can share with your employees.
Now you have some ways that you can start supporting employee mental health, but what if that support isn’t enough? I deliver presentations on workplace mental health. One is called transforming stigma in the workplace. The other is called how to find peace in times of uncertainty. And you can learn more about these presentations by clicking this link.
