Self-Care Resources for Mental Health and Emotional Wellness

Self-care is a term that is often referenced, but I’ve found that many people struggle with understanding what it really is. Self-care activities are the intentional and proactive activities that you do to help you grow as a person. They help lead us to a better version of ourselves, which allows us to care for ourselves and others better.

It’s important to understand the difference between self-care activities and escape behaviors. They can be easy to confuse. Escape behaviors may provide you with temporary relief from stress and anxiety, but they aren’t helping you make any real changes in life. Examples of common escape behaviors include things like binge-watching on Netflix, scrolling endlessly through social media, going on a shopping spree, gambling, or substance abuse. While you may feel like these activities are helping you to feel better, it’s not self-care.
